A little about me – for those that are interested.

Well, I’m not going to give you my life story, but a little about why I’m selling car accessories. It all started with my first car I ever bought in 1972, brand new! I was just 18 and earning $36 a week. Couldn’t do that now!

The purple Holden HQ Panel van below was my first car. It wasn’t purple and didn’t have the Statesman front end straight away. I was 18, and had great plans for what I wanted the vehicle to end up looking like. Well, I would loved to have had the knowledge and access to something like mycargoodies.com or some other outlet. Unfortunately, these sorts of things weren’t available, not even the internet 50 years ago. So most modifications I made were because of some other car I had seen either in real life or in a magazine etc. Of course being young and impetuous I just did what I wanted without really knowing what I was doing! What better way to learn? At one point I had what were called Lake pipes, which are long chrome exhaust pipes that ran along the side of the car essentially from front wheel to rear. Whilst I had seen many cars with these, the local constabulary decided that I was not allowed to. Another costly lesson learnt!

After many years and many cars later, my last car I had before I left Australia, was another Holden (GM). Since I was getting a little older, wiser and possibly more sedate, I chose a VL Commodore Calais Turbo. Pictured below in the carport, it was a great car, quite luxurious for its day, and quite fast if you wanted it to be. The whistle from the turbo was always a bit of a head turner, so that made me feel good. Strangely enough I learnt from most of my past mistakes, and didn’t mess with too much modifying. It was very reliable car and the only thing that really went wrong was a seal on the turbo broke. If you remember the Formula 1 cars of old that were V8 turbo driven and when a turbo blew it left a huge plume of white smoke behind it. This is what happened to me. It did look impressive and it did turn heads! I can state quite categorically the repair/replacement turned my head as well!!

As is reasonably common with young guys with big ideas, all sorts of designs for that dream car are carefully considered. One place where such designs and ideas came from was the local drag strip. Naturally the expense of these dangerously fast and decidedly loud cars (and dragsters) is way beyond the average joe, but its not just the ideas and cars we went to see; it was the adrenalin producing speed, smell and chest pounding sound. Naturally a lot of the mods we would liked to have done to our own cars were totally illegal, but we liked to dream in those days. The photo below is what I was originally hoping to eventually achieve, but as is common, things don’t always go to plan. It probably wouldn’t have been very practical for normal street driving, but I didn’t care about that!

These days I have a Toyota SUV mostly for playing golf with friends who visit me here in Thailand, where there are a myriad of fantastic golf courses available. But that’s another story.  If I was younger today, many of my dreams of cars would be more easily realized. This is because of many things, but the internet certainly makes it so much easier. Searching for suppliers, parts and indeed ideas is now so quick and efficient. I would like to think that mycargoodies.com could help some of those younger people, and older ones, by being able to supply parts and accessories to make your car safer, more attractive and shows people you have pride in your vehicle.
